What chemicals do you need for a pool start-up?
Starting a pool for the first time can be a daunting task. In order to get your pool started up properly, you need to add the correct chemicals. The number of chemicals you need to add will depend on the size of your pool. Make sure to follow the directions on the chemical bottles and always add the chemicals in the order listed below.
The first thing you need to do is test your pool water. You can purchase a water testing kit at your local pool supply store, online, or have one of our technicians come out. Test your pool’s pH levels and chlorine levels. The pH levels should be between 7.2 and 7.6 and the chlorine levels should be between 1 and 3 ppm (parts per million).
There are a lot of different chemicals needed to properly sanitize and maintain a pool. The main chemicals needed to start up a pool are chlorine, algaecide, and pool shock.
Chlorine
Chlorine is the most important chemical for pools. It is used to kill bacteria and other organisms that can cause disease. The level of chlorine in a pool should be between 1 and 3 ppm (parts per million).
Algaecide
Algaecide is used to prevent algae from growing in the pool. Algae can cause the pool to become cloudy and make it difficult to see the bottom. The level of algaecide in a pool should be between 10 and 20 ppm.
Pool Shock
Pool shock is used to kill bacteria and other organisms that can cause disease. It is also used to remove chlorine from the pool water. Pool shock comes in different forms, including chlorine-free and non-chlorine. The level of pool shock in a pool should be between 50 and 100 ppm.
Important Pool Chemicals
There are three main types of pool chemicals- sanitizers, oxidizers and pH balancers. Each type of chemical has an important role in keeping your pool water clean and safe to swim in.
Sanitizers
Sanitizers are the most important type of pool chemical. They work to kill bacteria and viruses that can cause illness. The most common type of sanitizer is chlorine, which is effective at killing bacteria and viruses, but can sometimes cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Other types of sanitizers include bromine and iodine.
Oxidizers
Oxidizers work to break down organic matter, such as sweat and urine, that can contribute to the growth of bacteria in your pool. The most common type of oxidizer is chlorine, but other options include ozone and ultraviolet light.
pH Balancers
pH balancers are used to adjust the pH level of your pool water. The pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6 for optimal chlorine effectiveness and to prevent skin and eye irritation. pH levels that are too high or too low can also lead to scale build-up on your pool surfaces. pH balancers include acids, such as muriatic acid, and bases, such as soda ash.
Keeping your pool properly chlorinated is the best way to ensure that it is safe for swimming. Check your pool’s chlorine level regularly and add more chlorine as needed. You should also shock your pool once a week to kill any lingering bacteria or viruses.
