How does a salt chlorine generator work?

A salt chlorine generator is a device that chlorinates swimming pool and spa water using electrolysis. Saline water is passed through a chamber that contains electrodes. The electrodes ionize the salt in the water, which produces chlorine.

The chlorine produced by a salt chlorine generator is the same as the chlorine used in municipal water treatment plants. In fact, salt water chlorinators are sometimes used in place of chlorine gas or liquid chlorine in large commercial pools and water parks.
